The Enrollment Cliff Isn’t Coming: It’s Here
June 26, 2026
By Jesy Herron, Vice President of Client Partnerships at RESLV
Over the last several years, RESLV has spent countless hours on college and university campuses interviewing students, alumni, faculty, coaches, researchers, donors, and institutional leaders. From recruitment campaigns and advancement initiatives to student success stories and a multi-year documentary project for Miami University, we’ve had a unique opportunity to observe how institutions communicate their value and where many struggle to differentiate themselves.
We’ve listened to prospective students talk about their aspirations. We’ve heard alumni describe transformative experiences that shaped their careers and lives. We’ve sat with university leaders discussing enrollment goals, institutional reputation, donor engagement, and the future of higher education.
And through all of those conversations, one reality has become increasingly clear:
The enrollment cliff isn’t coming. It’s here.
What is the enrollment Cliff?
Across the country, colleges and universities are facing a shrinking population of traditional college-aged students, increased competition for every applicant, growing questions about the value of a degree, and mounting pressure to demonstrate outcomes. The challenge is no longer a future concern. It’s sitting in enrollment meetings, budget discussions, board presentations, and strategic planning sessions right now.
The Numbers Aren’t the Only Problem
When enrollment conversations happen, institutions often focus on the obvious challenges:
- Demographic decline
- Application volume
- Yield rates
- Retention
- Financial aid
- Competition
Those are all real concerns. But there’s another challenge hiding underneath them. Prospective students increasingly struggle to distinguish one institution from another. We’ve done the research and there is a sea of sameness.
- Most universities say remarkably similar things:
- We prepare students for successful careers.
- We have passionate faculty.
- We offer hands-on experiences.
- We support student success.
- We have a strong alumni network.
The problem? Your competitors are saying the same thing stamped with a different logo.
What We’ve Learned from Higher Education Leaders
One of the biggest misconceptions about enrollment is that students make decisions based solely on facts. The reality is far more human. Students and families are trying to answer questions that don’t appear on a fact sheet.
They’re asking:
- Will I belong here?
- Will I be successful here?
- Can I see myself here?
- Is this investment worth it?
- Who will I become because of this experience?
In our work, we’ve found that the institutions creating the strongest emotional connections are the ones that answer these questions through stories. Not slogans. Not statistics. Storytelling.
The Stories Are Already There
The irony is that most institutions don’t have a storytelling problem. They have a story visibility problem.
Every university has:
- Students overcoming obstacles
- Alumni making an impact
- Faculty changing lives
- Researchers solving real-world problems
- Communities strengthened through education
Yet many of these stories remain buried within departments, academic programs, newsletters, or internal communications. The stories exist. The audiences simply never see or hear them.
Why Storytelling Has Become an Enrollment Strategy
For years, storytelling has been viewed as a marketing tactic. We believe it’s become something much more important. Storytelling is now a strategic enrollment tool.
Storytelling helps prospective students understand:
- Why an institution matters
- What makes it different
- How it creates opportunity
- What outcomes are possible
It turns abstract benefits into tangible experiences and creates an emotional pull. It creates trust before a campus visit, and it creates a connection before an application. In an increasingly competitive environment, connection matters.
A Different Way to Think About Enrollment
What if storytelling isn’t a marketing initiative? What if it’s enrollment infrastructure?
What if helping students understand why your institution matters is just as important as helping them understand what programs you offer? We’ve spent years listening to the people who make higher education meaningful.
Students.
Faculty.
Researchers.
Alumni.
Donors.
Institutional leaders.
And we’ve come to believe that some of the most powerful enrollment assets universities possess are already sitting on their campuses. They simply need to be uncovered, amplified, and shared.

The enrollment cliff is forcing institutions to rethink recruitment, retention, reputation, and engagement.
To explore these challenges further, we’ve created a new whitepaper:
Inside, we examine how colleges and universities can leverage authentic storytelling to strengthen recruitment efforts, build trust, increase engagement, and differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
